"Surface" is an experimental, handmade artwork exploring the character and transformation of a material surface.

For this piece, raw canvas was treated and naturally stained with coffee. The irregular marks, variations in tone and concentrated areas of colour emerge directly from the material and remain visible as part of the creative process. The warm, earthy palette evokes natural textures, weathered surfaces and organic forms.

Fine embroidery and individual beads have been carefully incorporated into the coffee-stained canvas. Set sparsely across the surface, these small elements resemble traces, particles or tiny inclusions within the textile. They create a subtle tactile quality that becomes particularly apparent when viewed up close.

The work combines textile art, abstract art and experimental material techniques. Rather than following a traditional pictorial composition, the surface itself becomes the focus — its texture, irregularities and the marks created through the process of making.

Silvija Kicivoj

Silvija Kicivoj, born in Zagreb in 1989, has lived and worked in Düsseldorf since 2008.

Silvija's works are created in the interplay between inner and outer worlds. She explores interpersonal relationships, emotional reactions, and the impact of her surroundings. Her works revolve around themes such as self-perception, change, balance, and the need to give deeper meaning to everyday experiences.

Through clear forms, finely placed lines, and a deliberate choice of materials, she translates thoughts and feelings into a tangible, visual language. Structure, surface, and atmosphere play just as important a role as content. The works do not invite quick interpretation – they appear quiet and restrained, unfolding their depth in dialogue with the viewer.
